Compostable vs. Aluminum Nespresso® Pods: What's Actually Better?

Short answer: Good compostable pods now taste as good as aluminum ones, as long as they have a proper oxygen barrier and are stored dry. The real difference is at the end: a home-compostable pod goes into your compost bin, while an aluminum pod has to be collected and sent to a recycling program. Many aluminum pods end up in the trash instead.

"Compostable" vs. "biodegradable" vs. "home compostable"

  • Biodegradable is a vague term with no time limit. Treat it with caution.
  • Industrially compostable means the pod breaks down only in a commercial composting facility, which many US cities don't have.
  • Home compostable means it breaks down in a backyard bin at lower temperatures. This is the strongest claim. Look for a certification such as TÜV "OK compost HOME".

How to get the best cup from compostable pods

  1. Store pods in their closed box, somewhere cool and dry, not next to the kettle.
  2. Run one water-only shot first to preheat the machine.
  3. Use the right button: espresso (1.35 oz) for espresso blends, lungo (3.7 oz) for lungo blends.
  4. Descale regularly, because scale affects any pod.
